#3829 - Monday, March 8, 2010 - Editor: Gloria LeeI LEFT MY STORY IN A BARN so someone else could keep milking it. I left my story in the fitting room; it didnt fit me anymore. I left my story at the hospital because it wouldnt stop bleeding. I left my story at the rest stop; it needed a rest. I left my story at the body shop because it always wanted a different one. I left my story with some cash so it could never say, Poor me. I left my story without saying where I was going because I didnt want it to follow me; it never even noticed I was gone.

Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.

The most beautiful paintings and sculptures, the greatest poetry, have not always been born from torment or bitterness. Often they have sprung from contemplation, from joy, from an instinct or wonder toward all things. To create from joy, to create from wonder, demands a continual discipline, a great compassion. . . . With time and sincerity, you will discover a way to work and write that does not harm you spiritually, that does not tempt you to vanity, that is the deepest expression of your spirituality. You will find a voice that is not your voice only, but the voice of Reality itself. . . . If you can be empty enough, that voice can speak through you. If you can be humble enough, that voice can inhabit you and use you.

"Suffering is not enough.
Life is filled with suffering, but
it is also filled with many
wonders, like the blue sky, the sunshine, the eyes of a baby.
To suffer is not enough. We must also be in touch with the
wonders of
life. They are within us and all around us, everywhere, any time.
If we are not happy, if we are not peaceful, we cannot share
peace and
happiness with others, even those we love, those who live under
the
same roof.
If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and
blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire
society, will benefit from our peace."
Thich Nhat Hanh
From the book, "Being Peace," published by Parallax
Press.
He who has found authentic
peace within himself is in a position to assist
others who are still seekers, but he who has not yet transcended
mere
theories and erudite studies about peace can only give them some
more
thoughts to add to the burden they already carry.

Transferring Merit
When a candle is lit in a dark room,
it illuminates the room to some extent, but its power is limited.
But if you use the same candle to light another candle, the total
brightness increases. If you continue to do this, you can fill
the room with brilliant illumination. The idea of transferring
merit to others is like this. If we keep our own light selfishly
hidden, it will only provide a limited amount of illumination.
But when we share our light with others, we do not diminish our
own light. Rather, we increase the amount of light available to
all. Therefore, when others light our candle, we issue forth
light. When out of gratitude we use our candle to light other
peoples candles, the whole room gets brighter. This is why
we transfer merit to others. This kind of light is continuous and
inexhaustible.
